Hey Boy!
Fri, 14 Nov 2008 20:17:19 GMT
Have you heard about Boys yet? I kinda thought everyone knew about this diamond of a Thai on Harrow road, but it would seem not. Boys Cafe have been around for years, and has a local reputation similar to that of Lee Ho Fook, however they DO deliver. Its a tiny premises, with no more than 10 tables and an even tinier kitchen dominated by a wok range and massive extractor fan that really shouldnR...
FREE THE STREETS!
Thu, 13 Nov 2008 17:29:18 GMT
Short notice, but here’s something I got via Facebook…. CLUB NIGHT - FREE THE STREETS! - 13 November 2008 In the summer, the Manifesto Club launched a campaign against booze bans, standing up against the petty bureaucracy that sucks the life out of public spaces. A whole host of activities are either banned outright or only allowed with official permission. As well as booze bans, there...

Tonight for one night only they will be teaming up with the Almighty Celebrity Murder Party for a night of frightful fund-raising for Charity Camp Cando. A Warning to bongo-drummers
Fri, 31 Oct 2008 23:08:01 GMT
Hackney man critically ill after catching Anthrax from bongo drums! OK - that’s a bit of a silly way to put it, but someone is, sadly, very ill after inhaling anthrax spores from animal skins while making drums. Apparently it’s not unheard of. A quick google-around tells me that someone in Scotland died in 2006, and another drum-maker from Greenwich Village had the same problem a while...

OMG! SNOW!!!
Tue, 28 Oct 2008 23:14:14 GMT
So, I go see a film (Burn After Reading - pretty good), and I walk out of the cinema thinking about the end of another Coen Brothers film, Fargo, with all that snow, and I hear people going “Oooh - look”, and what do you know - it’s snowing like hell! Totally unexpected. I love that.
Boris and Ken in Lego
Mon, 27 Oct 2008 22:45:22 GMT
I went to Legoland Windsor a few weeks back. Rain, queues, expense, queues… you get the picture. The kids loved it. But I was amused to see that the personnel at London City Hall have been updated. Boris, Ken: there they are…
Guerilla Gardening
Mon, 27 Oct 2008 22:32:21 GMT
I spotted this attempt by a local resident to make the world a better place, by replacing the dogshit and fag packets around the base of some road signs with pretty plants. Applause! More coolness here, on the Guerilla Gardening Homepage

Staines may suck, but…..
Fri, 10 Oct 2008 19:30:20 GMT
I was coming on the tube home tonight (well the bus and the two tubes, working in Staines sucks), reading the London Paper as usual. I have for the last week or so tried to delude myself that there is NO finacial crisis and everything is NOT going to get more expensive by reading various books on the way to work; however having stayed at the Boys house I was today without any books and therefore h...

Pavement Archaeology

mystery symbols I’ve been working in Soho for many years, and have always wondered about the weird little symbols that one sees carved into kerbstones. What are they for? How old are they? Are they cut into the stones before or after the kerb is laid? Maybe some of London’s kerbs are cut from ancient Celtic megaliths? What does a triangle mean? A cross? An X with dots? A little arrow? ...
What’s the Matter with a super club?
Wed, 24 Sep 2008 19:48:46 GMT
Last Thursday I was lucky enough to go to the press launch of the new “super club” in London’s O2. Matter really is a hell of a place. It has a huge amount going for it as it can be and will be a club that will play an eclectic amount of music having dance and indie nights as well as having live acts as well. With its location in the dome the best way to get there is pretty much...
I am getting some Afghan action
Mon, 15 Sep 2008 10:30:53 GMT
I finally got my own enormous, gorgeous carpet from Afghan Action. I posted about this London/Afghan charity before, and the good work that they do offering training, education and a good living within Afghanistan. Now I have an example of the craftsperson’s work on my floor and it is utterly stunning. It’s so nice to get something for the home that is fair trade and will last a lifeti...
Thames Festival
Sat, 13 Sep 2008 22:30:05 GMT
Incase you haven’t heard, this weekend is the Annual Mayors Thames Festival. Myself and my friend Natasha passed through there today. We had a bit of a walkabout, I had met another friend from Uni in Caranby street for Lunch - Pure California, (expensive but really really nice), and I decided to walk down to check out the Pavilion. Tash called me whilst I was on the way and then we ended up ...

Oooh Ooooh! Pirate Party Alert!Of all my favourite things to do, dressing up as a pirate has to be to be top on my favourites list. Pirates are simply the best, striped tights and pantaloons or wench blouses with buckled bootsyou cannot fail to look super cool and dangerous when you are a pirate.Even better is doing so whilst having access to a boat - and best has to be while you are partying on a...
London Levees
Fri, 05 Sep 2008 10:05:10 GMT
What does a video about Hurricane Katrina have to do with London: 1) London’s levee system is mentioned at the end of the video 2) I’m moving from London to New Orleans on Monday 3) Londoners watch Youtube (if you click through to the video on youtube and watch and comment, the video will rise to the top thus highlighting the fact that what happened in New Orleans after Katrina was a m...
Thank goodness for the boys in blue (not)
Fri, 05 Sep 2008 10:00:54 GMT
Stoke Newington is CRAWLING with police this morning. You’ve never seen so many police. All over the frigging place. “What are they doing?”, you ask. Busting a major crack ring? On the trail of a terrorist cell? Nope. Catching cyclists. Yep - you heard me right. They have Stokey on lock-down so that they can bust people for riding down alleys without dismounting, running red ligh...
Banksy in New Orleans
Thu, 04 Sep 2008 16:34:39 GMT
Banksy Battles the Gray Ghost I’ve been very remiss in my posting these days. That’s because I’ve been orchestrating an international move from London to New Orleans. Come Monday, partner PJ and I will be back in the arms again of my family and childhood friends. Head Metblog Dude, Sean Bonner, has allowed me to carry on bitching on the New Orleans Metblog, so yay! And, speaking o...
SELFISH…
Wed, 03 Sep 2008 19:21:41 GMT
For the second time this week I was late this morning. There were 5 Fire engines, two police vans, and a emergency response unit as I exited Hammersmith pink line and made my way over to the Broadway Centre…A bomb maybe? or a security alert? NO… a fucking suicide. I am awfully sorry if you think I am being unsympathetic, but I don’t think its fair. I have suffered depression, as h...
The twitterings of a bridge
Wed, 03 Sep 2008 17:36:22 GMT
Those of you who are aware of Twitter may be amused to hear that Tower Bridge is now at it. What a happy, eventful and productive life the old girl seems to be leading. Hurrah for Tower Bridge, and her endless opening and closing! If you feel tempted to become a follower of Tower Bridge (and, let’s face it, who could resist?), here’s a link
Southgate
Sat, 23 Aug 2008 17:24:29 GMT
Always a beautiful station, Southgate has surpassed itself since its recent renovation and restoration. If any tube stop deserved a visit on it’s own credentials its this one. A Beautiful example of Art-Deco Design, the surrounding shopping arcade and one-wayflatter the lovely Island station in the middle!
Handmade…Artful…Noodles?
Sat, 16 Aug 2008 15:30:01 GMT
I met Ariana back in 2001. She played the lead in my first ever directing effort, “Thicker than Water,” and she did the accent as well: Southeast Louisianian (nearly impossible for even the natives). She’s since been in several features including “Me without You,” and “Susie Gold,” in theatre, music videos, commercials and on TV. Anyway, after having been ...
Oyster/Voyeur Cards
Thu, 14 Aug 2008 16:06:53 GMT
I’m digging this subversive little sticker I spotted on a wall in Upper St, Islington last night Makes me want to go and look up the facts about the information that TFL gathers about my movements. That’s TFL plus any government/council busybody or their mates. And, no doubt, the police. If you can’t make out the URL on the sticker, it’s: http://www.neoexternalism.co.uk In...
Take a gamble this weekend
Thu, 14 Aug 2008 00:37:09 GMT
Learn to make the big bucks! Ok i admit it I have a gambling problem…the problem is that I love it way too much. My poison is No-Limit Texas Hold’em poker, and everything about it. For example it is 12.34am and i am writing this post while playing online and watching a tournament on the telly. You catch my drift? Well I am very excited that this Friday evening and Saturday daytime Lond...
Drunk and sleepy on the Buses
Wed, 13 Aug 2008 18:12:41 GMT
london night busSo I got invited to a particularly posh awards to do in beautiful London town the other day. The usual free champagne, wine and beer flowed all night long and by 11 o’clock the night is going well (or so I thought) I decide to meet up with some friends around Liverpool street… and the next thing I know I am asleep on a night bus and it is 3am. How did this happen, well quite obviou...
Looking down on St Paul’s
Mon, 11 Aug 2008 16:38:55 GMT
OK, so, not quite looking DOWN on St Paul’s - more like across…This is one of a series of pics I took from the top of this building:… while working there a while back.Fun fact: there’s a helicopter pad on the roof! (No, silly - not St Paul’s, the office block.) And round, in the other direction, we have Old Father Thames, Parliament and the ubiquitous London Eye:As a...
G’night, London
Sun, 10 Aug 2008 22:58:27 GMT
HMS Belfast, Tower Bridge, rain & a blasting sunsetA storm over the Thames this evening proved once again who runs the lighting around here. Once the rain let up after supper, this full-arc (sometimes double) rainbow sprang from (according to where we stood, anyway) the Tower over the HMS Belfast and Tower Bridge to bury itself behind City Hall. (click any of the images to enhugify). More afte...

Brown Cow or Stew anyone?
Fri, 08 Aug 2008 22:04:39 GMT
Mack is leaving us this week, so were having a VERY last minute meet up tomorrow at Armanos cafe Tower Bridge…. “The bread is fantastic, contributing to sandwiches that blow the likes of Pret a Manger out of the water.” Flavour MagazineWith a reveiw like and a riverside veiw that i doubt we can go wrong - then we have the company of one Blogging LA’s finest to ice the cake!...
Elite Squad
Thu, 07 Aug 2008 23:21:59 GMT
This film was released one year ago in Brazil and before going to the movies, half of Brazil had watched it because some guys from the company that put the subtitles in English, pirated it on the internet. [There was actually a big gaffe when the Brazilian Minister of Justice said he had watched it before the official release]. I was surprised to see the banners in the underground this week, becau...
Chivalry is not Dead in London
Wed, 06 Aug 2008 11:35:46 GMT
To the man with the face piercings on the No. 134 bus at 6:30 a.m.: thanks for showing me that chivalry is not dead. As the bus pulled up and opened its door, you smiled, did a little bow and waived me to go on first. First, a definition from Wikipedia (bold is mine): “Chivalry is a term related to the medieval institution of knighthood. It is usually associated with ideals of knightly virtu...

Reflections on a knife - a stupid Yank’s tale
Tue, 05 Aug 2008 19:37:53 GMT
I’ve learned two crucial things about living in London, in the most interesting and dangerous ways possible, since arriving for a month-long visit three weeks ago.Indulge a dim American tourist for a second, if you will … Sure, I’ve visited London before. One of the great cities of the world, and probably a close second to NYC for my favorite.I stayed four summers with my parents...
How not to sleep on the Tube
Tue, 05 Aug 2008 19:22:24 GMT
To the young partier crashed out on the Northern Line at 9 a.m.: Dude: While I can respect the amount of partying it takes to sleep sprawled out on the northbound train from London Bridge whilst everyone is stepping over you and scowling, you’re not cool. While your mouth is hanging open so wide and you’re snoring so loud I could probably drop a ₤1 coin and it would fall all the way to...
I Prefer "Couch Surfer" to "Homeless"
Tue, 05 Aug 2008 15:30:54 GMT
Although, technically, we are homeless as we do not have a fixed address. We are in a better position than most homeless people, however. We are the middle class of homeless: we work, we go to the cinema, we both have Oyster cards. We are lucky. My former employer has allowed us to store our severely diminished personal effects in the basement (we had to throw out about three quarters of our stuff...

Open Letter to Karen Buck MP
Tue, 29 Jul 2008 22:38:31 GMT
Dear Karen Buck, As you will know Dub Vendor record shack Ladbroke Grove is closing this Wednesday 25th June after over 28 years of business. Dub Vendor was key in bringing Jamaican and Carribean music to London and has played a central role in the Ladbroke Grove community.Whilst we must accept the closing of the store I am extremely concerned that we may lose the mural on the side of the store, o...
Introducing The Hub
Mon, 28 Jul 2008 06:36:17 GMT
If Metblogs is a city, hub.metblogs is the playground. We kept hearing from people that one of their favorite parts of Metblogs was meeting and interacting with readers and writers from other parts of the world, as well as getting requests for more ways that readers could be involved besides just posting comments. We thought about this for a while and decided that with a network like this, a gian...
See "Psycho Buildings" before it closes …
Tue, 22 Jul 2008 00:18:58 GMT
Hey, Londoners. It’s Mack, the captain wrangler for Metblogs. I’m on loan here from Los Angeles for a few weeks (all right, I’m on holiday with my wife and kids, and rudely crashing your party) but I had to share: On our first weekend in town, we stumbled into the sort of exhibit that smacks you smartly across the chops and reminds you that Modern Art Needn’t Suck: If you h...
Nothing Like Old Clothes to Make you Feel Awesome
Mon, 21 Jul 2008 12:39:22 GMT
I am so, so loving Junky Styling. DesignersAnnika Sanders and Kerry Seager get their source material from charity shops and jumble sales, then, presto chango, they come up with something like this:or this:, which I am so going to beg them to let me wear to my next red carpet event. They have a long-established shop in Brick Lane, so get your ass on your bike and ride down there for some very speci...
Charity Starts at Home
Sun, 20 Jul 2008 12:07:24 GMT
Living in Westminster, I get to see a lot of homeless people. It is the policy of our Borough to discourage giving cash. They might be scamming. They might use it to buy smack. I don’t know. If people feel that they have spare cash to give, then maybe they should just do what their hearts tell them to do. I don’t give cash. I can’t spare it. Not one pence. But, I can give other s...
